A crown is a part of the tooth. The natural crown of a tooth represents what we usually see in the mouth. Which means that crown is a part of the tooth that appears in the mouth cavity above gingiva. Dental neck and especially tooth root are usually not seen. Crown perfoms the main tooth function – mastication. That is why a crown should possess high strengh and resistance. This can be reached by presence of solid tissue: dentin (solid tooth tissue and enamel (layer of substance that covers dentin). Tooth crown is not a lifeless part of a tooth. By means of vessels and pulp nerves and due to the cellular structure of dentin, there is intensive metabolism in a crown. It increases during chewing.
Tooth crown is fixed prosthesis of tooth crown made from different materials for form restoration or prosthesis fixations. Porcelain-fused metal crowns are most spread nowadays. They represent a very solid carcass that is covered by thin ceramic layer. This crown outwardly is indistinguishable from healthy teeth and from the strength point of view even exceeds them.
The main disadvantage of teeth crowns is that the tooth should be turned to it. But sacrifices are worth it, especially if there is no other way to return beauty, form and strengh to a tooth. Correctly fixed crown with the right care can serve up to 20 years.
